Why do "tomatoes on the vine" go off so quickly?

When I buy "tomatoes on the vine" from my supermarket they seem to go off and fungus covered in a couple of days. Yet tomatoes bought loose don't. Why the difference?

Why do "tomatoes on the vine" go off so quickly?
They just ripen faster on the vine than they do off the vine. buy them on the vine and when you get them home, take them off so they stay fresh.
Reply:I have no idea, my fridge is great! it always has loads of fresh food in it and I don't buy any of it :-D
Reply:I wish I could tell you, every year I had some tomato plants. My black lab dog would pick the tomatoes off of the plant as soon as there was a hint of red.
Reply:That's odd, I always find it the other way round?
