Grape vine?
Hi Biffo, You must always leave until the sap stops rising or the vine will bleed. You can do it now before end of December. Cut back previous lateral shoot to one or two plump buds. The plumper the better as it is more likely to produce a shoot with flowers next summer. Take out any broken or straggly laterals cutting back to main brown stem.. Do nothing more for next two to three months until vine starts into growth again. Water thoroughly and give a general fertiliser, mulch with well rotted farm manure or spent mushroom compost and give a dressing of sulphate of potash to promote flowering. Heres to a good crop.
Reply:November.
Reply:I seem to recall that the best time is after you've picked all the grapes is the best time to prune... I.e. when the vine has finished producing for the year. In places like France, I think that's around October / November time. But in somewhere like England, I'm not sure how soon the grapes are in season.
