Trumpet Vine [Campsis radicans] Lore?

Hey, I've just Wild Crafted some trumpet vine [Campsis radicans] that was growing wild alongisde the road this afternoon. It is presently in my basement drying to be bottled in about a week or two. Anyway, as a native flower of North America (so far as I ama ware) I was wondering if anyone might know of any folk-lore and mythology (probably Amer-Indian) surrounding this particular herb. I am also curious whether or not there happens to be American-influenced Santeria or Voodoo/Hoodoo herb-lore surrounding this plant as well. Extra browny points for anyone that sites their sources (the more reputible the better!). Thanks!

Trumpet Vine [Campsis radicans] Lore?
There isn't much. Oddly enough, it isn't mentioned in my book about wildflowers of Texas, and yet it grows wild all over the place here. Perhaps the doctrine of signatures would be useful. The plant grabs onto whatever it can, and grows and keeps growing. It was used to cover out-houses for women who lived in the country who thought that outhouses were something they'd rather not look at. You can take a cutting and just stick it in the dirt and it will take off. It will crawl over buildings, fences, telephone poles, etc. The country people out here in Texas would let trumpetvine and honeysuckle grow but would pull up grass out of their yards and have just dirt yards. (???)

If you have sensitive skin, it might make you itchy. If you pick it and dry it, I'd advise looking inside the flowers for bugs and spiders, since they love to hide in there.

I did find this, but they listed no sources for this info...

Trumpet vine question?

Can I plant the seeds that grow on the trumpet vine this time of the year and have new plants come up next year from them?

Reply:I would recommend that you start them indoors around February so when the last frost day in your area arrives they will be ready to plant outside
Reply:NO! do not plant these vines as they are a terrible 'weed' that is almost impossible to eradicate.Ordinary brush spray that is designed to kill woody vines won't touch them. I have ben fighting a infestation by my chimney for twenty years and still loosing.

How well does Trumpet or Cross Vine bloom in filtered shade or deep shaded areas?

And how far apart should one space this vine if wishing to create a screen along the back of a property?

Thanks for your answers!

How well does Trumpet or Cross Vine bloom in filtered shade or deep shaded areas?
Yes - they will bloom in part shade.

You will need to have a support for them such as a fence or trees. Set about 3 feet apart and pinch tips to encourage branching.

Anybody with experience of Silver Fleece Vine(Fallopia)?

I am wanting to grow this vine perhaps up the side of my two story brick house. There is not any windows on the side and it has a huge brick wall to cover. I heard that this vine is really easy to grow and can grow 10-15 ft in one season!

I also like the way it looks in this picture covering a brick mansion. It is soo beautiful). It blooms like that for how long? can you tell me about it?

What does it look like in winter?

doesnt this vine have a cousin in the Fallopia family that is like a shrub?

Anybody with experience of Silver Fleece Vine(Fallopia)?
I have a couple silver lace vines that cover a 12 foot arbor, I believe it's the same thing as fleece vine. This vine clings to any structure without harming it. It blooms starting around the middle of summer and continues into Fall. It does lose its leaves in winter and looks a bit scraggly. You can prune it to keep it in shape or just let it sprawl. It can reach 30-40 feet. Silver lace vine is not particular about soil but likes it moist. It is very beautiful and well worth planting. Good luck!
Reply:this plant, though pretty to look at, is considered a noxious and invasive weed in most areas where it is hardy. be careful or it could overtake your yard in a few years. check with your local horticulture authority before you purchase or plant it.

I have a Blue Concord grape vine & first week in July most the green grapes fell to the ground. Why is this?VA

Grapes will mature the last week in July. No blight was found on vine or any other damage. Vine is about 5 years old. Had no problems before this year. No one knows why this is happening. Vine is located in Hopewell, Va.

I have a Blue Concord grape vine %26amp; first week in July most the green grapes fell to the ground. Why is this?VA
Your problem is probably related to a lack of thinning the vine.

The following person had a similar problem...

Arlington, Va: Adrian,

I have a 10 year old concord grape vine that in the last couple seasons does not produce well. Many of the grapes ripen and fall off very early and small. I inherited the vine and know very little about what is required to keep it in top shape. Are there basic things i should be aware of ? Thanks.

Adrian Higgins: Grapes benefit from thinning. You don't need to thin every berry cluster, but remove entire bunches at flowering time or shortly afterwards. The ones that remain will be larger. I would also spray it with a copper fungicide against mildew and rot.

Asian vine snake?

yeah i j got an asian vine snake some time ago, and now there are these two lumps on it is it pregnant or is something wrong with it, oh and it is still shedding properly.

Asian vine snake?
If the lumps are on the stomach it can have diarrhea or be constipated , but if it on it's back where the spine is, they could have a spinal problem. But those are only possibilities. Your should take it to the vet cause either way that can't be very good.
Reply:a gravid snake would have one huge lump not two... so I have no idea what it is. I would suggest you go to a vet and get and x-ray. It might be food though if you just fed it.

Vine weevils problem?

i brushed past a fushia in my garden(it was in a pot and not doing well).it came apart from the pot and when i tipped the pot out there were no roots at all just loads of white grubs.how do i kill the grubs ?do vine weevles only live in potted plants and if so will i stop the problem by planting up all my plants into the garden rather than having pots?

Vine weevils problem?
Wrap a wet newspaper around the roots, and up the stalk 1 inch above the dirt.
Reply:Vine Weevils live in all garden conditions. Borders, pots, boxes, greenhouses, anywhere suits this pest. Control is available for CONTAINER grown plants, use Provado Vine Weevil Killer, it is a `mix and spray` concentrate that works well on pot plants, but is not suitable for open ground. Good luck, you will have Vine Weevils for life, but some control is possible.
Reply:Nematodes they live in the ground also..you have to treat the ground with the spray.

If you have the same variety I have the fruit will be anywhere from yellow-green to a deep yellow-orange with bright red seeds inside. I can send you photos of the flowers and fruit if you like.
Reply:Actually, it is the flowers that you eat. You can make tea out of the leaves. It is a calming herb that is a sedative. It is good for insomnia and nervousness and hysteria.

The flowers are good in a salad or eaten raw. Check out hte link.

Reply:You can get fruits from one vine if you pollinate it. This can be done by delicately dabbing the anthers of the flowers with a Q-tip. This spreads the pollen from one flower to another, and it they should bear.

The problem with getting tattoos when you are 18 is that when you are 38 the vine is gonna spread into a jungle.

anyways when you get preggers you will strectch it out and as many babys you have the more and also if you gain weight it will also strectch when getting tatts you should get them in a place that skin doesnt stretch as much b/c after time it will look disfigured even though you are getting eins they wont look as bad as if you got somethign else.

Vine like weeds in yard, taking over the lawn?

I looked it up and I have crabgrass and this appears to be chickweed..it is lower to the ground kinda vine like and it grows in patches and near curbs, could someone identify that this is chickweed or something else ,and what can I do for it?

Vine like weeds in yard, taking over the lawn?
It probably is chickweed. There is probably no easy answer particularly if you don't want to use chemicals. Dig it up, throw it away, turn over the patches of open lawn, put down some topsoil, lots of grass seed, overlay it with straw and water it. Hopefully, with the right weather, you will get grass to come up and get rooted before the winter weather sets in. If the grass gets a good healthy start it will outgrow your weeds. Good luck. (I don't care what the water conservationists say, my grass died from the drought and I will be out there with you trying to get grass growing, even though we are now well flooded, my grass has major dead areas and crab grass and chick weed and plantains etc are just taking over.)
Reply:Rips all that stuff up and plant real grass.
Reply:If the leaves look like a spade on a playing card that is not chickweed, that is called Buckwheat and is going to be very tough to remove, since the roots go on forever. They have a small white flower.
Reply:I have been fighting chjckweed for 30 yrs. The best way is pull it up or dig it out. Do not let it go to seed. I'm winning the battle. There is an old saying that says, "One year's seeds, seven year's weeds." So don't let it go to seed. I've tried weed killers without much sucess.
Reply:When in doubt use round up it will kill anything. Some weeds have a real bad root system, those sometimes need all areas dug up and replaced with good dirt.I am currently fighting two types of weeds that were killed last year and came back.
Reply:There is grass seed that you can purchse that will help the lawn, while getting rid of crabgrass and other weed like things. Check at your home and garden store, it should list it on the package.

I have this very intrusive vine in my garden area....?

The vine itself is a reddish color and the leaves look heart-shaped. Is this poison ivy? If not, then what could it be? It's taking over everything and I want to get rid of it - or at least control it. But I don't want to touch it unless I know what it is. Can anyone help?

I have this very intrusive vine in my garden area....?
You could blow it up with a grenade.
Reply:Can you provide more information (a picture/link would be most excellent!)? Is it a woody vine or more herbaceous? Are the edges of the leaves serrated or smooth? How big are the leaves? And so on, and so on.

In the meantime, I was taught as a child that "Leaves of three, let it be," meaning that if the leaves are in sets of three on the end of the stem, it's most likely poisonous.

Hope this helps.

Vine inlay on a guitars?

Ok, so I'm thinking of getting a new electric guitar soon and I've had a look around and I really like the look of the "vine" inlays on guitar.

The only trouble is that the one i can find an inlay on is just under £1500 (Ibanez JEM7 V White) which is out of my price range, so are their any other guitars with that type of inlay, or , if not, are their any places that sell necks with those inlays?

Vine inlay on a guitars?
The vine inlay is something of an Ibanez symbol.

They are also relatively costly to manufacture, compared with dots. So you are unlikely to find it on a cheaper guitar.
Reply:Ibanez and Paul Reed Smith guitars are the only ones I know of that have the vine inlays on them, without going custum. I'm guessing that you are in the UK. I know that here in the states there is a company called warmoth that sells necks. They also sell custom stuff as well. The Jem series has been out quite a while so you shouldn't have any problem finding one in a second hand store. Either way, good luck.
Reply:I don't think many cheaper guitars will have that. You could try a second hand PRS.

But maybe just buying a guitar for sound and playability would be a better use of your money.
Reply:It's got to be a PRS mate!

But I'd worry more about the tone rather than what it looks like – unless you think the vine inlay would really inspire you!

Vine Wood . . Genus???

I got this question to do on a holiday assignment and the tree I got given was a Vine Tree.

"Identify which genus this wood belongs to"

Only I don't get what the question means, so I don't know the answer, and I can't ask my teacher cause I'm on holidays.

My parents don't know either of course. Can anyone help???

Vine Wood . . Genus???
Jeez, this took some research. I'm a plant fanatic, so I enjoyed it though.

Check out the link that follows. It's the only "vine tree" I could find that didn't refer to grapes in one way or another.

http://ajh-knives.com/xylo-3.html

Scroll all the way to the bottom and you'll find it.

I hope this is what your teacher is looking for! I exhausted all my gardening websites, and found a bunch more, before I was able to run this down. So thanks for asking the question - you actually did me a favor!
Reply:"Genus" is a class, kind, or group marked by common characteristics or by one common characteristic; specifically : a category of biological classification ranking between the family and the species, comprising structurally or phylogenetically related species or an isolated species exhibiting unusual differentiation, and being designated by a Latin or latinized capitalized singular noun.

The "Genus" for the Vine Tree is "Ventilator". So the Latin name for Vine Tree is Ventilator virginals.

Ventilator virginals, commonly known as Supple jack or Vine Tree, is tree native to Northern and Central Australia from coastal regions of Queensland to the central deserts of the Northern Territory.

The plant begins life as a scrambler, using other trees, shrubs and evens grasses for support. As it ages the stem becomes increasingly woody and the plant eventually develops a growth form more typical of a tree. The tree can reach 10 metres in height. Leaves are pendulous, grey-green and lanceolate. Flowers are green to green-white. Flowering season varies depending on rainfall.

Australian Aborigines eat the gum from this tree. They scrape it off as it comes through, twisting it onto a stick. It can be chewed like chewing gum. The supplejack in Arrernte is called Atnyerampwe, and the gum is Ngwarle atnyerampwe.

Good Luck!!

Vine Leaves?

Im cooking for a lady on Saturday night. I want to make stuffed Vine Leaves from scratch but so far I cant find anywhere that sells the leaves on their own. Can anyone point me towards somewhere that sells them?

Vine Leaves?
Most supermarkets sell them, but try the nearest Asian or Middle Eastern shop. I usually buy them vacuum packed, they look flat in the shop but there are loads in each pack
Reply:You can buy them fresh from your local Asian grocery store. They will be with the fresh vegetables, green in colour and wrapped in clingfilm.
Reply:If you go to an Asian / Chinese shop you will find them in a flat pack with brine / vingegar. They have a long shelf life and are delicious if you follow the instructions on how to rinse off the brine.
Reply:You may get them in tins from a specialist grocer
Reply:You may be able to adjust the recipe if you are unable to get vine leaves by using blanched inner cabbage leaves
Reply:They have them in my local shop-tinned. If not,try spinach leaves!
Reply:instedt of vineleaves , try spinach, its nice too and has loots of vitamin d in it, but you can ask in a greek shop they might have vineleaves. good luck with it.
Reply:try holland and barett (health food shops they might have them) good luck
Reply:Other than going to your local vine yard you'll have to used the stuffed ones!
Reply:The leaves you are looking for are grape leaves. You can get them in the canned food departments. They are packed in glass.

Vine or Ivy that doesn't destroy brick?

My house in Toronto has very old %26amp; weak brick. Is there any Ivy or vine that will grow in shade or not much sunlight %26amp; won't ruin the brick (as I understand ivy can have a substance that breaks down brick).

Vine or Ivy that doesn't destroy brick?
English Ivy does grow well on brick but it is the worse for breaking apart a brick wall. Its tendrils (not a chemical) work their way into cracks and then expand, breaking apart the mortar %26amp; brick. Try Boston Ivy. It only attaches to the brick's surface via hold fasts, not in the cracks with tendrils like English Ivy. Boston Ivy is the same Ivy growing on the outfield brick wall at Wrigley Park, home of the Chicago Cubs. 200 Boston Ivy plants where planted on that brick wall at Wrigley Field back in 1937 and the wall stands today untouched.
Reply:Either English Ivy or Swedish Ivy will grow well on brick. I once bought a brick home that had ivy growing on the brick when I bought it, but that was many years ago %26amp; I can't recall the name of the ivy. There was no evidence of the ivy breaking down the brick/mortar when I bought it.
Reply:The chemicals in the vines are not the issue. Vines and particularly ivy have very persistant and strong root tendrils.

They will exploit any small crack between the brick and the mortar. water gets in then freezes, causing cracks to widen and vines work in further.

Just like having ivey on oak or maple trees, it may look good but you are slowly killing the tree. Likewise with your brick. If you want to keep your house in as good condition and miantence free, keep the ivy and vines off the house. Period.
Reply:No. Eventually any type of ivy will wear the brick down. If you absolutely have to have it, consider installing a trellis next to the house so it grows on that instead of the brick. I had a 40 ft. neighbor's pine tree fall on my house because ivy grew all over the trunk and eventually killed the tree so that it could no longer support its own weight.

Regular english ivy will grow in sun or shade.

Jill of the Jungle swings on a vine 6.1 m long. What is the tension in the vine if Jill, whose mass is 61 kg,?

Jill of the Jungle swings on a vine 6.1 m long. What is the tension in the vine if Jill, whose mass is 61 kg, is moving at 2.9 m/s when the vine is vertical?

N

Jill of the Jungle swings on a vine 6.1 m long. What is the tension in the vine if Jill, whose mass is 61 kg,?
Tension in the vine when it is vertical:

Tension = weight + centripetal force

T = mg + m(v^2 / r)

T = 61*g + 61(2.9 ^2) / 6.1

T = 610 + 84.1

T = 694.1 N
Reply:Note that Jill is moving in a circular path. Whenever something moves in a circle, it has a centripetal component of acceleration equal to this:

a_centripetal = v²/r

The "v" is 2.9m/s; and the "r" is 6.1m.

The direction of centripetal acceleration is always toward the center of the circle, which in this case is straight up. Since the centripetal acceleration is in a vertical direction, we can also say:

a_vertical = v²/r

Now we use "F=ma". The net vertical force on Jill must equal her mass times her vertical acceleration:

F_vertical = m(a_vertical)

F_vertical = mv²/r

Furthermore, there are only two vertical forces acting on her:

(1) the tension in the rope, T (upward)

(2) her weight, mg (downward)

Therefore, the net upward force on her is: (T−mg). So we can substitute that into the previous equation:

T−mg = mv²/r

They give you "m", "v" and "r"; and "g" is just 9.8m/s². Solve for T.

Why wont grape vine yield any grapes?

a while back i purchased a grape vine (with grapes) which i ate. since then no more grapes. do they only yield once? cause the vine is still here.

Why wont grape vine yield any grapes?
Yes, you also need to train them either on triailes, or wire them up and tie them with Green Garden tape. So you also need to put if you only have one grape vine approximately 1 1/2 cup Sulfate Ammona to fertilize around the Grape vine.

This will help also. Then now pruning will depend on what you wish on your grapes. What I mean on this is as your prune the vines, pay attention very close:{ If you wish High sugar contents then cut the vines even Number eye lits on the vine, if you are growing for home wine then odd Number eyelets. Which are the new Spring Buds for coming season growth season. { Example : count either 4 buds then cut vine or other

7,11,13 then cut vine%26gt; This works out even for small Garden or Patio Grapes, trained on a Trellis.} Good luck and happy Growing Grapes.
Reply:Some grape vines yield grapes every other year. To ensure that your vine is fruitful you should prune the vine at the end of the season when it would be dormant for the winter. You will want to trim off all of the excess vines and branches leaving only the main vine. You will be surprised at how quickly your vine will sprout new growth!

as far as a tattoo now and what it will look like after pregnancy only God knows. BUT i wouldn't have a tattoo on my sides until after pregnancy because i would hate to have a beautiful tattoo only to have it stretch out and look awful. i am holding off on my ribcage tattoo until after i have kids. some people are genetically lucky and when they get pregnant only their belly grows, other people grow all over and may never return to the way they were before.
Reply:I think Somebody got it right.

The tattoo looks good, but I'd be afraid you'd get some stretch marks right in the middle of it. I think it would be best to either get it on your back, or wait until after you've had kids.

Doc
Reply:All of your skin in that area will stretch during pregnancy. There are steps you can take during and after your pregnancy to help reduce damage to your tattoo. Look at your Mom, does she have a lot of stretch marks on her side and stomach? She will give you an idea of what will happen when you have a child.
Reply:It depends on your body type and it might look elegant if done by the right professional

They just ripen faster on the vine than they do off the vine. buy them on the vine and when you get them home, take them off so they stay fresh.

When is the best time to prune a Trumpet Vine -- early spring or late fall? How do I get rid of baby vines that are now springing up in my lawn two feet from the mother plant? I've tried cutting them off at the ground, but they're not taking "no" for an answer! Do I dig them up? Poison them? Pray (LOL)?

Reply:I agree with all the other answers. I've learned to NOT plant vines unless you are prepared for the worse. I've been trying for about 9 years to kill off two Wisteria Vines. It's almost impossible to ever get all the roots, so I just keep ripping and cutting off the shoots as they reappear. I had the same thing happen with a Trumpet Vine as you are experiencing. Mine gave up a couple of years after chopping it down and trying to dig out the roots. Don't give up! But, don't plant anymore vines.
Reply:It's too late. It was too late when you planted it. My dads answer was getting goats and letting them go at it. Dont cut them off at the groung, you have to dig out as much of the root as you can, but they do send out underground runners, so....

Wack 'em back anytime, they will take a huge amount of abuse, as I'm sure you've allready learned.

Does anyone know what the vine i have growing on my fence is?

I have a 5 leaves vine that doesnt have any blooms that come up ,but i like this vine. Someone told me that it looks like an oak vine. Maybe poison oak or ivy, but I believe that they only have 3 leaves

Does anyone know what the vine i have growing on my fence is?
My immediate thought was Virginia Creeper I think it would be helpful if you add more information. Like location/zone, size of leaves, how tall is the plant, growing habits, light (sun or shade). A photo may help.

Heres a website for vines.
Reply:Poison ivy and oak have three leaves, also they are kind of shiny from the the sap. Just remember "leaves of three leave them be". That way you can't get in trouble. Maybe it is a climbantis.
Reply:Poison Ivy is dangerous!

Wisteria...not sure!

Twin C and Jolleyfarmer2003, have done a lot of hard work, and it's "worthwhile," following what they have both said. I give both of them a thumbs-up rating on their answer bar.

Vine Wood . .

Vine Wood . . Genus???
You have not specified the name of a vine tree. Anyway, most probably you are looking for a "genus Actinidia" which is a genus of woody plants including shrubs growing to 6 m tall, and vigorous, strong-growing vines, growing up to 30 meters in tree canopies.
Reply:The sites I visited listed the grape vine and the fig as the vine tree. The grape vine has about 8000 varieties, but all appear to be from the genus Vitis which is underlined. Hope that helps. Oh, the fig genus is Ficus with 800 species.
Reply:OK, I couldn't find the specific genus...that's gonna take some research. However, genus is a scientific classifcation. I would look up both what a vine tree is (and what it's related to) and what genuses have those plants. Good luck!

Vine borers?

I am inteested in what ppl use when it comes to vine borers, what works for you, if any?

Vine borers?
You can find the place in the vine where the borer is (you'll see "sawdust") and gently cut it out . Then cover that part of the plant with soil and cross your fingers that it's okay.
Reply:Do you mean corkscrews?

If so there are plenty on the site below, I use the power octopus but be careful as many wines now have synthetic corks and they will straighten out the corscrew

Just south of you, in Clear Lake, English Ivy works great. Mine is consistently good over the past three summers and winters.

Ipomoea (sweet potato vine)

Mandevilla

Solanum jasminoides (potato vine)

Manettia (firecracker vine)

Passiflora (passion flower)

Scaevola aemula 'Ble Wonder' (fan flower)
Reply:What side of the House? North, south, east, or west?

If it's the north or east side of the house, and you plan to water well, try Grape Ivy, Wandering Jew, or Creeping Charlie (Plectranthus Sp.). You could go for a very striking effect with a variegated Spider plant interspersed with plain green leaves of the Grape Ivy.

If it's the west side of the house, Variegated English Ivy (Hedera Sp.) will do well so long as it receives late afternoon sun. Clematis will do well on the West and South Side of the house, as will Morning Glories, Trumpet Vines, and other brightly flowered vines.

But it depends on what side of the house the window box will be. For the North side use plants that prefer shade, for the south side be prepared to use plants that like direct sun and heat.

A potato vine....?

I recently bought and planted one against a wall(the wall is in the north west area of the yard) Do I need to put of a trellis or chicken wire and train this vine, or will it be fine left to its own devices? Any suggestions for other vines that are fast growers, and do well in VERY hot conditions(I live in AZ, the walls in the south, west and east parts of the yard get upwards of 130 degrees in the summer) Thanks in advance!!

A potato vine....?
Hello Heather -

Being you asked about Potato Vine (Solanum sp) - let's answer that question ... this is a good choice for hot locations, as it is also seen here in Southern California. The other responder is also correct in that it is always seen "downward" and this helps to ultimately answer your question.

You can train it to "lean" or grow-into a trellis or some type of vertical support - but, it is not necessary. It is not a vine (such as a pea) which has tendrils which require it to grab onto something in order to grow. It also is not of a "vine" such as a Morning Glory which requires something to twirl itself around in order to give itself support.

If you wish to give it more support for upward growth, my advice would be to very loosely use vine ties (or raffia or small bits of natural rope) to train it upwards (for instance over a trellis). Its important not to tie it too strong if you do this method and to continue to tie it upwards until you achieve the height which you want it to be. At that point you can prune it to keep it under control - or, allow it to begin to spread back downwards again. If left to its own devices, it would just become a large sprawling bushy "vine" that does not require support of any other plant or matter to grab onto.
Reply:You will need something for it to climb over, they are very popular where I live (inland Australia) and are usually grown over open wire fences, trellises etc.

Other vines that grow well where I am are wisteria, virginia creeper (pathenocissus quinquefolia), ornamental grape vine, (vitis), star jasmine (trachelospermum jasminoides), jasmine (Jasminum polyanthum) . My temperature ranges from 20 deg F to 115 deg F. Hot and dry with winter rainfall.
Reply:Whenever I have seen them they are growing downwards. I think your best bet would be to start it on a trellis and then let it wander.
Reply:Look for Cardinal Climber. It's beautiful, hardy and does well in poor soil. It finds ANYTHING to hold onto and when it gets to the top of something it has climbed several vines will wrap around each other to climb higher. At the end of the season it's pretty easy to remove from whatever it grew on as it becomes dry and brittle and pulls off easily.

Passion Flower Vine (Passaflora)?

I bought a Passion Flower vine this spring and planted it. It grew beautifully and vined all up and around the trellis just as I wanted it to. I have it in a mostly sunny area. The vine is sturdy, heathly and strong but there are no flowers. Does anyone know if you need a male and female plant or something like that to get blooms and flowers?

And if so, can you tell a male from a female plant?

Thanks.

Passion Flower Vine (Passaflora)?
I don't believe you need a male and female. I dug two plants from the forest near my property and planted them at the front porch trelis. I thought I may need a male and female. So I took one from one place and another from another place hoping to get a male and female. Neither bloomed the first year, however this year both bloomed and both bore passion fruit. Such a beautiful flower with good fragrance and a good tasting fruit. I had spent some time in Hawaii and had eaten the passion fruit there which was the same as a fruit I had eaten when growing up in Arkansas. And behold it was a passion fruit also. So now have a good producer of passion fruit. Note: The fruit is delicious when mixed with lemon ade.
Reply:Hi. I only have one passion fruit vine and it gets covered with flowers but produces no fruit. It may be a hybrid of some sort. Every year the caterpillars almost eat it to the ground. I do not spray it because it always comes back and my yard is full of butterflies for about a month. Report It

How do I kill a wisteria vine that has taken over my yard?

The vine has killed trees and we have cut the vines at the tree roots, however it seems to be encouraging new growth and new vines to pop up from the ground. The vines are everywhere along the ground and some are up to 4 inches wide.

How do I kill a wisteria vine that has taken over my yard?
best way to contain it is constant pruning throughout the growing season, which also makes it flower well.Good luck digging it up, the tap roots are extremely deep.
Reply:I think I read somewhere that pounding a nail into the base of it will kill it...

or try

Reply:You might try a systemic herbicide as the new growth starts, but you will probably need to give it several appications... Best of luck, Nick.

Advice on killing a vine next to a Victorian house.?

I have quite a serious vine growing up against the back of a Victorian house. The ground under the old encaustic tiles is sinking towards the vine so I guess I need to take it out. I've read the advice on how to kill the vine, but I have a couple of other questions:

1. Is there a best time of year to kill it?

2. It's right next to the house. One of the answers I read suggests that if you kill it and the roots are under the house, they'll rot, leave a gap and cause worse subsidence. The house is on a hill and the tiling on a verandah with a 3 - 4 foot drop to "ground level". So I'm figurting that the foundations would be pretty deep and so I'm probably safe unless the roots have eaten in to them. So is it best to cut it. leave it or get in a structural engineer?

Advice on killing a vine next to a Victorian house.?
transport to a california bungalow
Reply:Just tip 1/2 lb. sodium chloride in an area 3ft. diameter around base and forget it
Reply:cut it off at the base, and go to your local garden center and get Brush and Stump Killer. Swab it on the cut surface, straight, right out of the bottle, or paint it on, or pour it on (you don't need much) if there is nothing else growing there that you do not want to kill. It will die and never come back. Kill it any time of the year.

It depends on the size of the vine whether or not a void from the rotting roots will cause damage. My guess that leaving it to grow will cause more damage than getting rid of it.

HUGE passionfruit vine.. no flowers (Australia)?

I have a well growing, very foliage driven passionfruit vine that must mesure around 5-6 meters long and 2-3 meters high. Its growing on a trellis and its the only plant nearby.

Yet I have no flowers showing up, and haven't seen any in the 18 months its been established...

Any ideas how to trigger them..I want some fruit, to sit under the vine and eat all day ( i have no appendix... beofre you say it ! )

HUGE passionfruit vine.. no flowers (Australia)?
Passion-fruit usually takes about two or three years to set fruit. You may get an occasional fruit now, but next year you should have an abundance.

Be sure not to spray for flying insects as you do not want to kill the pollinators! :)

Do you fertilize and water it?

It sounds like it is getting to much nitrogen.

How is the pH?

Hope this helps!

Can indeterminate vine tomato plants be pruned of of new growth at top and grown shorter?

i have some vine tomato plants growing inside this winter.at least i think they are vine.i had so many seeds i harvested i cant tell what type they are now.but they are about 2 to 3 feet tall now,and i am limited to height.in there location.so i pinched off the newest growth today.at the top.they are very healthy with no blossoms yet.are about 8 weeks old now, will this keep them short.and how long till i can expect fruit? thank you.this is my first attempt at indoor tomato's.they are on a window sill, with southern exposure.along with peppers ,and other veggies.very stong looking at this point.side shoots have long stems with about 9 to 10 leafs each at this point and growing longer every day.any help would be great, waiting for fruit" in northeast USA.

Can indeterminate vine tomato plants be pruned of of new growth at top and grown shorter?
I experimented doing so outdoors last Summer while they were flowering and fruiting. Let them grow about 3/4 the height you wish. Cut back so that a cluster of flowers is at the tip of the vine, and pinch out the buds that begin to grow sprouts at the leaves just below the flowers (between the base of each leaf and the main stem. You will have to do this 2--3 times per week. If you stop, they will take off growing again.

Other responders were correct about need for a means of pollination.

If you need more fruit, let one or more shoots 'get away from you' until them produce blooms. As far as when they will first fruit, check the seed packet--the stated 120 days (or whatever) is date from planting seed to first mature fruit.
Reply:Pinching is o.k. but formation of the

fruits requires pollination of the flowers which is not happening naturally indoors, so a little help is needed. Pollinating with with q-tips works; Bee well.
Reply:Hello,

You have some good advice already, and to which I would like to add a link to get some "Blossom Set", to help with your pollination concerns.

I've used this in the past with good results.

How come my grape vine doesn't produce grapes? Does it need pollenation?

There was a grape vine when I moved in, its been about 6 years now although I have never seen it produce grapes but it grows tremendously every year and I cut it back every year. I recently bought a new grape vine and that one has already produced grapes. I noticed the leaves are different but both are bright green leaves. Do grape vines need to be pollenated or is it too old or what? Any advice would be great, thanks!!!

How come my grape vine doesn't produce grapes? Does it need pollenation?
they have to be old, 10-15yrs, and when they start, need alot of water.
Reply:Grape growing is an art form.

They are picky plants that need proper soil and lots of attention.

Consider calling a grape grower in your area and asking questions. There are many websites about the subject. Books too. Go to the library, it's free and the employees can help you find what you're looking for.

Cheers.
Reply:What they need more than anything is fertilizer, I dont think they need pollination, you should be able to see the grapes form in the spring you should also be able to see a very small flower in front of the grape thats forming. At this time you cant shake it, or cause little flowers to fall before their time. A grapr vine should produce evn asmall amount from the first year. If you dont see these things happening the vine may even need to be grafted, (a piece taken from another vine and grafted on to yours)
Reply:If your new grape vine has already produced grapes then pollination is taking place ther in your area. Perhaps your old grapevine is not compatible to your climate. Perhaps the small grapes are being frosted before they can become grapes. That happens to mine here in Texas sometimes. Or maybe you are right about the pollination. Certain grapes are self pollinating while others are not. Do they bloom atthesametime
Reply:all plants are male and female, the one that is producing grapes is a female, are you pruning the other vine at the right time of year? There are certain times to prune them and you might be cutting them when they are making there blooms. Look up when to prune them. Otherwise just keep enjoying your plant.

Fast growing vine & trees- preferrably evergreen or semi?

I am wanting to plant some fast growing vine on my chain link fence for privacy. I'd prefer evergreen but semi-evergreen is fine too. I am in zone 7 so need something that does well in this zone. I know some vines are poisonous to horses, cattle and goats so am wanting something that if by chance they eat it that it won't hurt them. I am also going to plant some trees along the fenceline, any suggestions on a good hardy tree that will grow quickly?

Fast growing vine %26amp; trees- preferrably evergreen or semi?
Vines- Star jasmine, Lady Banks Rose, Carolina jasmine

Trees- how tall and wide could the trees reach, how far away from the fence are the trees going to be planted.
